Overview

The UCSB Campus Cloud is a set of cloud services - Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform -  providing our campus with building blocks that can be assembled to meet your research, instructional, and administrative application needs. The services include infrastructure-, software-, and platform-as-a-service offerings run by a central, normally-remote, service provider.

To ensure UC employees have access to cloud services that meet the campus requirements for security, privacy and liability, the UC system has negotiated contracts with these providers: Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.

These authorized cloud service providers can help you:

  • Keep data safe and secure, protecting it from unauthorized third party access
  • Meet federal and state regulations for storing/managing sensitive data
  • Reduce risk and liability for the university in the event of a data breach
  • Access additional features, storage space and discounts

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Amazon Web Service (AWS) is UCSB’s largest, “first and best in AWS” provider of cloud computing resources. With a full set of infrastructure-, platform-, and software-as-a-service offerings, AWS has become the campus’s premiere choice for cloud computing strategy. Using the AWS offerings, UCSB has built a managed, integrated AWS environment known as a “Landing Zone.”

Microsoft Azure

Microsoft Azure, commonly referred to as Azure, is a cloud computing service created by Microsoft. Azure offers building, testing, deploying, and the managing of applications and services through Microsoft-managed data centers. Azure provides service offerings supporting many tools, and frameworks; including both Microsoft-specific and third-party software and systems.

Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

Google Cloud Platform (GCP), offered by Google LLC, is a suite of cloud computing services running on the same infrastructure that Google uses internally for its end-user products such as Google Search. Alongside a set of management tools, it provides a series of modular cloud services including computing, data storage, data analytics and machine learning.

Getting Started

Visit docs.cloud.ucsb.edu for more information, including instructions on requesting an AWS account. For additional help, including architectural reviews or assistance getting started, please email info@cloud.ucsb.edu.

Special Considerations

Building applications on AWS requires an understanding of cloud-computing architecture and cost structures. Mistakes in design and operation can lead to substantial costs. We strongly recommend that anyone intending to build or manage applications on AWS, at a minimum, complete the free AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials online course. For additional information regarding minimum requirements for using Campus Cloud services, please email info@cloud.ucsb.edu.

Campus Cloud Feature Request

The UCSB cloud team routinely implements new features to the service. Please use our cloud intake form to request any changes/features to the service. Once your request is submitted, the cloud team will review your request and reply back once the request has been evaluated.
